J.C. WHITNEY TRUNK
Things have changed at J.C. Whitney:
This trunk looks like mine, but I sure as heck didn't pay $172 for it!
They do have THESE at a more normal price and would be what *I* would look at if I had to buy another hard shell.
I would have been able to use only two existing holes for the mounting plate, and that would have put the trunk in a position that was too far forward for my wife to ride comfortably with me, and would *probably* have been too far forward for me and my waterproof duffel that I net on the back of the seat up against the trunk.
I didn't like the bolts that came with the trunk, and couldn't get them to sit low enough to not interfere with easy removal and installation of the trunk onto the mounting plate. I got funnel-headed stainless bolts from a hardware store as a substitute. They nicely sit down into the plate.
I positioned the mounting plate just far enough back so that I could still use the stock tool kit box.
The pictures should show how I placed the bolts, and that I just cut off the bolt ends to the right length so they'd fit between the rack bottom and the fender top. I used a countersinking router bit in my drill to make sure the bolts sat as flush as possible - that probably wasn't necessary.
The picture above should give you a better idea of the bolts that *I* found to work best for installing the trunk mounting plate - even better than the ones supplied. This is just a standard (not metric) stainless bolt with a funnel head that fits perfectly into the pre-drilled mounting plate bolt holes.
The picture above shows the mounting plate of the trunk being measured from the front-most corner of the KLR rack to the flat jutting out part of the mounting plate. This measurment is 3 7/8"

The underside of the rack / mounting plate. I used some blue loctite along with the split washers to make sure that everything stayed in place, and wasn't rattled loose.
The above picture shows the trunk as it sits mounted on the plate. There's access to the stock tool kit, plenty of room for a passenger to sit comfortably, or a large duffel to be netted on the saddle up againt the back of the trunk.
I don't carry much weight in it, so the overhang has not been an issue...
